Dear Boistfort Families,

I am writing to discuss how grading and student advancement will look going into next year.  We have been given guidelines by OSPI (Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction) that we have been working through to develop a plan for grading and advancement for next year.

Work for the remainder of this school year and grading for this school year;

We will continue to send work in packets on Mondays.  We have distributed all the materials to support learning to your student through the use of google classroom or through hard copy packets depending on your students age and your homes’ internet capabilities.

In addition to these materials we hope that you will access the reading program that was started two weeks ago.  So far we have over half of our students involved in this program.  Your students’ efforts during this time have been amazing.  We want to thank all of you for the level of support that you have given our staff and your kids as we continue to figure out how to best support student learning remotely.     We are aware that this time has been challenging for everyone.  The amount of uncertainty about school and the uncertainties in our world is stressful, but we wanted to send some guidelines regarding this year’s grading.

 OSPI has given weekly updates about policies and procedures that we are charged to support throughout the school closure. Here is the guidance and details around grading that we have been given by OSPI.

  1. Students in grades K–8 will be challenged to demonstrate effort and success in learning standards established by their teachers. Students will move on to the next grade, unless by mutual agreement between parents/guardians and teachers they agree to repeat a grade or a portion of learning missed. Districts will retain complete decision-making on middle school grading practices for students not taking high school credit-bearing courses.
  2. Schools are to do no harm based on advancement and grades that students had prior to our school closure on March 17th.

Based on these guidelines we will be using the following guidelines to assess students within our standards.

Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade will move to the next grade at the beginning of next year.  Teachers will continue to send materials and assess student learning based on the standard for each grade level.  Student report cards in June will show standard in their grade level.  We will support students after they we return based on initial assessments and the grade level standards we have for the grade level they are in.  We will continue to support distance learning for every student through June 19th.

Student’s in 6th through 8th grade students will be receiving a grade for this semester based on the following criteria:

A B C I
Turns in materials weekly with greater than 80 percent of the work attempted, logs into google classroom/zoom, and reaches out to the teacher if there are question about the work Student checks into google classroom and returns majority of work attempted. Checks in most weeks with less than 50 percent of work attempted No effort is shown in.  Student does not return materials and does not log into google classroom each week.

Students grades prior to school closure are locked.  They will not receive a lower grade than what they had prior to the school closure.  They can move their grade up based on the work they do during this time.  For example, if your student had a D in a class and had turned in all material during this they can move up the scale based on the above criteria.  Also, if your student had an A, they will not fall below this standard.   We will continue to support and send resources to support their learning remotely but this will be how we finish the school year.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher or Mr. Clark.  We hope that you continue to stay safe as we look to support each other and our community through this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Chris Clark
